Preliminary Alternative 3
Alternative 3, Full Corridor Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), would replace the existing Tappan Zee Bridge with a new bridge. The new bridge would have eight general-purpose and two High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes that would carry a cross-corridor, exclusive-lane Bus Rapid Transit system between Suffern and Port Chester. The use of exclusive lanes would allow buses to travel at higher speeds and have more reliable travel times. Highway improvements in Rockland County would include climbing lanes for slow-moving vehicles and HOT lanes for smoother traffic flow and reduced delays.
The maps, shown at the scoping update meetings held on February 26, 27, and 28, 2008, depict Alternative 3 and two variations known as Option 3A and Option 3B.
